Early Life and Education

Illich was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1926. He studied chemistry, history, and philosophy at the University of Vienna. In 1951, he was ordained a Catholic priest.

Work in Latin America

In 1956, Illich moved to Mexico to work with the indigenous population. He was appalled by the poverty and oppression that he witnessed, and he began to question the role of modern technology and institutions in creating these conditions.

In 1961, Illich founded the Center for Intercultural Documentation (CIDOC) in Cuernavaca, Mexico. CIDOC was a center for research and education that focused on the problems of poverty and development in Latin America.

Critique of Modern Society

Illich's work at CIDOC led him to develop a critique of modern society. He argued that modern technology and institutions were not only failing to solve the problems of poverty and oppression, but were actually making them worse.

Illich's critique of modern society was based on the following key ideas:

* Modern technology is creating a culture of dependency. Illich argued that modern technology is designed to make us dependent on experts and institutions. This dependency is eroding our ability to think for ourselves and to solve our own problems. * Modern institutions are undermining our freedom. Illich argued that modern institutions, such as schools, hospitals, and prisons, are designed to control and manipulate us. These institutions are stifling our creativity and our ability to live our lives according to our own values. * Modern society is destroying the environment. Illich argued that modern society's reliance on fossil fuels and other non-renewable resources is destroying the environment. He also argued that our obsession with economic growth is leading to the destruction of our natural resources and the pollution of our planet.

Illich's Legacy

Ivan Illich was a visionary thinker who challenged us to rethink our assumptions about modern society. His work has inspired a new generation of activists and thinkers who are working to create a more just and sustainable world.

Illich's legacy is a complex and controversial one. Some critics have accused him of being anti-technology and anti-progress. However, Illich's work is not about rejecting technology or progress. It is about creating a more humane and sustainable society that is based on human needs rather than on the dictates of technology and institutions.

Ivan Illich was a brilliant and provocative thinker who left a lasting legacy on our understanding of modern society. His work continues to inspire and challenge us to create a more just and sustainable world.
