Monica Seles Playing Tennis The Academy: Game On Monica Seles

Monica Seles was one of the most dominant tennis players of all time. She won 9 Grand Slam titles, reached the final of 11 more, and was ranked world No. 1 for 178 consecutive weeks. Her career was cut short by a stabbing attack in 1993, but she returned to the sport and won another Grand Slam title in 1996.

Seles was born in Yugoslavia in 1973. She started playing tennis at the age of 6 and quickly showed a natural talent for the sport. In 1989, at the age of 16, she won the French Open, becoming the youngest player ever to win a Grand Slam title. She followed that up by winning the Australian Open and the US Open in 1990 and 1991, respectively.

Seles's dominance was based on her powerful groundstrokes and her aggressive playing style. She was known for her ability to hit winners from both the forehand and backhand sides. She was also a very good returner and could put pressure on her opponents from the start of the match.

In 1993, Seles was stabbed by a deranged fan during a tournament in Hamburg, Germany. The attack left her physically and emotionally scarred. She took a two-year break from the sport and when she returned, she was not the same player she had been before the attack.

Despite the setbacks, Seles managed to win another Grand Slam title, the Australian Open in 1996. She also reached the final of the French Open and Wimbledon that year. After the 1996 season, Seles's career began to decline. She retired from the sport in 2003.
