Characters
Sir John Falstaff: A rotund and cunning knight known for his corpulence, wit, and roguery. He is the central figure of the play and the primary source of its humor.
Mistress Ford: A clever and virtuous housewife, who, along with Mistress Page, becomes the target of Falstaff's amorous advances.
Mistress Page: Another cunning and virtuous housewife, who joins forces with Mistress Ford to outwit and humiliate Falstaff.
Master Ford: Mistress Ford's jealous and suspicious husband, who suspects Falstaff's intentions towards his wife.
Master Page: Mistress Page's husband, who is more tolerant and skeptical of Falstaff's motives.
Anne Page: The beautiful daughter of Master and Mistress Page, who is pursued by several suitors, including Fenton and Slender.
Plot
The play opens with Falstaff sending identical love letters to Mistress Ford and Mistress Page, expressing his affections and arranging secret rendezvous. However, both women are aware of his reputation and have no intention of succumbing to his advances.
They join forces to devise an elaborate plan to humiliate Falstaff. Mistress Ford leads Falstaff to believe that her husband is out of town, while Mistress Page informs Master Ford of the planned rendezvous. Enraged, Master Ford disguises himself as "Master Brook" and confronts Falstaff, who claims to be a wizard named "Doctor Caius."
Falstaff is subsequently tricked into hiding in a laundry basket, which is unceremoniously dumped into the River Thames. Humiliated and drenched, Falstaff vows revenge.
Meanwhile, Anne Page is courted by several suitors, but her heart belongs to Fenton, a handsome and impoverished gentleman. Her parents, however, favor the wealthy and dim-witted Slender.
In a final scheme to expose Falstaff, the wives arrange for him to dress as "Herne the Hunter," a legendary figure associated with Windsor Forest. They trick him into believing that Anne will meet him under this disguise, but instead, Fenton emerges from the forest and elopes with Anne.
Falstaff, once again humiliated, is left to be mocked by the entire town.
